Posted on June 17 – Celebrating His Birthday

On this day in 1965, one of the greatest centers in NFL history was born—Dermontti Dawson, a Pittsburgh Steelers legend who redefined the center position and anchored one of the toughest offensive lines of his era.

Dawson was drafted by the Steelers in the second round of the 1988 NFL Draft, and by the next season, he had already taken over for Hall of Famer Mike Webster. He didn’t just fill those shoes—he upgraded the position. Known for his incredible athleticism, agility, and the rare ability to pull and block downfield, Dawson became the prototype for the modern center.

“He could do things no other center could do,” said former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher.

Dawson’s dominance earned him:

  • 7 consecutive Pro Bowl selections (1992–1998)
  • 6 First-Team All-Pro honors
  • A spot on the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team
  • Induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2012

Nicknamed “Dirt,” he played 184 career games, all in the black and gold, before retiring after the 2000 season. His durability, leadership, and consistency helped carry the Steelers through the 1990s, including a trip to Super Bowl XXX.

Legacy

Dermontti Dawson is more than just a Steelers great—he is a symbol of Pittsburgh football: tough, selfless, and elite at his craft. His impact is still felt today, with modern linemen and coaches regularly referencing Dawson when discussing the ideal center.

Happy Birthday, Dirt.

June 17 belongs to one of the greatest Steelers to ever suit up.
